Rain Threat Looms Over India vs West Indies T20 Decider in Bengaluru
Rain threatens the India vs West Indies fifth T20 International in Bengaluru on October 17, with the series tied 2-2. IMD and BBC forecasts indicate a high chance of showers, raising concerns over delays and the series outcome.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Bengaluru is likely to experience generally cloudy skies on Saturday, with one or two spells of rain or thundershowers. The department has also issued a warning for thunderstorms accompanied by lightning. The minimum temperature is expected to be around 20 degrees Celsius, while the maximum could reach approximately 29 degrees Celsius.
The BBC weather forecast also indicates a high probability of rain during the match window. The chance of rainfall is forecast at 66 per cent at 5 pm, rising to 68 per cent at 6 pm and 69 per cent at 7 pm. It is expected to reach 70 per cent at 8 pm and remain at 70 per cent at 9 pm before easing slightly to 69 per cent at 10 pm. These forecasts indicate that rain could interrupt the match both around its scheduled start and later in the evening.
Could Rain Wash Out the Entire Match?
Although the threat of rain is significant, it is not yet possible to confirm that the entire match will be washed out. If the showers are brief, the match could begin after a delay once the ground becomes fit for play. However, prolonged rainfall or thunderstorms could force the teams to play a reduced-overs contest.
The M. Chinnaswamy Stadium's drainage system helps remove water from the playing surface. Nevertheless, continuous rainfall could make it difficult to start the match on schedule. With the series tied at 2-2, both teams will be keen to complete the decisive encounter and secure the series victory.
Batting-Friendly Pitch and Dew Could Influence the Contest
The Bengaluru pitch is generally considered favourable for batters. High-scoring matches have also been a feature of the venue during the Indian Premier League (IPL), provided there are no problems with pitch preparation. This time, however, weather conditions could have a greater influence on team strategies than the pitch itself.
If the match gets underway and continues into the late evening, dew could become another important factor. A wet ball can make it difficult for bowlers to maintain their grip and control. Under such conditions, the team chasing a target could have an advantage. Assessing the conditions at the time of the toss will therefore be important for both sides.
West Indies Eye First Series Win in India in 24 Years
The West Indies have not won a series of any format in India since 2002. Saturday's match presents the visitors with an opportunity to end that long wait. With the five-match T20 series level at 2-2, both teams face a must-win contest to claim the series.
However, if rain affects the encounter, the series outcome will also depend on the weather and the applicable match regulations. For now, the conditions over Bengaluru remain a major concern for India and the West Indies ahead of the series decider. Rain could emerge as the biggest obstacle to a conclusive result.
India's T20 International Record in Bengaluru
The last time India played a T20 International in Bengaluru, the team faced Afghanistan in a match that went into a double Super Over. India won that contest. Nearly two years after that encounter, the Indian team returns to the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium to face the West Indies, with the series currently tied at 2-2.
India have played eight T20 International matches at the Bengaluru venue overall, winning four, including the double Super Over encounter. The team have lost three matches, while one game ended without a result.
Saturday, October 17, will determine whether India or the West Indies emerge victorious in the series. With both teams seeking a decisive finish, the weather forecast could prove just as important as the action on the field.
